Based in Bath, Studio Walcot creates considered residential and commercial interiors that balance natural materials, architectural character and a strong sense of place. We spoke to Creative Director Lindsey Jones about the studio’s approach to interior design, its influences and the role of wood flooring within its projects.
Tell us a little bit about your company and what you do.
Studio Walcot is a COVID success story. Established in 2019, the studio secured its first whole-home project shortly before the UK went into lockdown, using the time that followed to establish its foundations and grow the business.
Our approach is centred around simple, calm and natural schemes that allow the architecture and original details of a building to shine. We like to mix old and new, creating lived-in spaces that feel considered without being overdesigned.
Later this year, we’ll also be moving into a new working studio and showroom, where we’ll be launching our first collection of interior homewares.
How did get into interior design?
We spent the pandemic working remotely, using the time to strengthen the foundations of the business and build relationships with prospective clients and suppliers. Since then, we’ve grown the studio organically, working across a range of residential and commercial projects throughout the South of the UK.
What are your greatest influences?
Based in the centre of Bath, surrounded by Georgian architecture and a rich architectural heritage, we naturally draw inspiration from our surroundings. From city life to the coast and countryside, we look to the character of each location when developing a design concept.
We bring elements of the surrounding landscape, architecture and materials into our interiors, creating spaces that feel connected to their setting. With projects across the South of the UK, we’re fortunate to work in a variety of locations, each bringing its own source of inspiration.
Do you have any notable projects where you have specified Ted Todd floors?
We recently completed the Paragon Project, a one-bedroom apartment set within the Georgian architecture of Bath. The brief was to create a contemporary take on classic Georgian design, allowing the building’s original features and proportions to remain central to the scheme.
Cashmere Herringbone was chosen throughout the open-plan living area, hallway and bedroom, creating continuity across the apartment. Our client was immediately drawn to its natural tone and texture. We also needed a hard-wearing floor suitable for commercial use, with the ability to develop a natural patina over time.
We’re currently working on an apartment overlooking the estuary in Salcombe, a boutique hotel in Bath and a farmhouse in Somerset.
