Interior designer Anne-Marie Leigh usually spends her time designing for her portfolio of residential clients across the South East. However, for this Spotlight, Anne-Marie tells us how she introduced grace and poise into her own traditional 1930s home.
We had the pleasure of meeting Anne-Marie at her Surrey home, where she lives with her husband, Mark, their sons Louis (15) and Max (13), and four British Shorthair cats. Specialising in residential interiors across Surrey and London, Anne-Marie brings a relaxed, considered approach to each project, creating homes with character and personality.
Tell us more about your renovation experience, what factors played a part when choosing the floor?
Having specified Ted Todd flooring across client projects and always being pleased with the results, I knew we wanted Ted Todd for our own home. Colour and texture were important to us, and we wanted a light floor with natural variation.
We chose Furrow Herringbone and Furrow Plank throughout the open-plan ground floor. Using both formats creates a natural flow between spaces, while the light tone and textured character add warmth without overpowering the rest of the interior.
It has worked beautifully in our home, and we regularly receive compliments from friends and family.
How would you describe your design style?
For me, interior design should have longevity rather than follow trends that quickly date. My style is classic with a contemporary twist, using a neutral backdrop layered with texture and considered pops of colour to add character.
Lighting is another important part of my approach and is often overlooked. I love creating warm, inviting spaces, so I always layer different types of lighting to build atmosphere, depth and a sense of drama.
What were your main inspirations for getting into the industry?
We tend to work on full-house refurbishments and extensions, creating practical, functional spaces that feel considered and are designed to be lived in and enjoyed for years to come.
There are so many inspiring designers, but I particularly admire Kit Kemp, Studio Duggan and Emma Sims Hilditch, as well as US designers Shea McGee and Kelly Wearstler.
Something about the British interior design has captivated the world for decades. Why do you think people love British interiors?
British country house style is rooted in history, heritage and tradition, which is part of its enduring appeal, particularly with homeowners in the American market. Classic craftsmanship, natural materials and layered textiles come together to create characterful spaces with a strong sense of place, designed to be lived in and enjoyed for years to come.
Do you have any tips you could share to create the modern traditional style achieved in your home?
When designing a home, it is important to consider how each room flows into the next and choose colours that work cohesively throughout. I also love to layer texture, from flooring and rugs to soft furnishings and furniture. These layers add depth and interest, while helping each space feel connected.
How would you go about introducing grandeur into your clients homes?
You don’t need to live in a grand home to create an elegant interior. It is about choosing the right combination of furniture, fixtures and finishes. Classic details can work across different styles and room sizes, creating a considered space with character and warmth.
New meets old
Whether you live in a period property with original features or a contemporary new build, combining traditional and modern elements can create a more considered interior. Layer classic details with contemporary furniture, soft furnishings and finishes to give the space character without feeling overly formal.
Natural Touches
Natural materials bring warmth and texture to an interior. Wood flooring, marble, stone, clay and organic textiles can be layered throughout the home to create depth and a stronger connection to the natural world.
