A 720 sq m residence by Belmont Homes demonstrates the role flooring can play in shaping a complete interior. The property includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a dressing area, an open-plan kitchen and dining space, a family room, boot room and home gym. Clean architectural lines, abundant natural light and a restrained palette connect each part of the home.
Wood flooring establishes continuity across most of the property. Two light-toned European oak floors were selected for different areas: Petworth Plank and Herringbone from Ted Todd and Otis Plank and Herringbone from Woodworks by Ted Todd.

We spoke with Simon Gallop, Founder and Creative Director of Belmont Homes, about the specification process and the importance of viewing a floor as part of the whole interior.

How important is flooring to a project?
Flooring is the canvas and the foundation for the wider scheme. It sets the mood of a space and shapes later choices around furniture and accessories.
Available light is a crucial consideration because it influences the creative direction of the house. Colour and format are also integral when establishing the right flooring foundation for a property.

How would you rank aesthetics, practicality and price?
Aesthetics, practicality, then price.
Which flooring materials feature in this property?
Wood flooring is used throughout most of the property. We chose terracotta tiles for the boot room because they give that area a soft, durable surface.
Otis Extra Wide Plank and Otis Herringbone are combined with wenge inlays across the ground floor.
Does wood flooring feature in every Belmont Homes property?
Yes. Tiles have valuable practical qualities, although they can introduce a colder feeling to an interior. Natural wood brings warmth, comfort, texture and interest. It creates continuity through room transitions and maintains a connection with the natural world.
Wood also has an enduring quality. With suitable care, it supports the lasting character and value of the property.
How did you decide where to use Petworth and Otis?
Otis from Woodworks was selected for the principal rooms because its hand-finished detailing and natural character gave those spaces the presence we wanted.
I specified Petworth from the Ted Todd Project collection across the first floor, including the bedrooms, bathrooms and landing. Its light oak tone complements the ground-floor scheme.
Both floors are made from nature-grade European oak and offer plank and herringbone formats. This allowed us to continue the same visual language through the house while responding to the purpose and budget of each room. Otis creates emphasis within the entrance and reception spaces, including a herringbone installation detailed with wenge inlays.
What should people consider when choosing a wood floor?
Grading is an important part of the decision, and it needs to be assessed across a substantial area. A hand sample provides an introduction to colour, texture and finish. Larger displays reveal the variation that will be present across an installed floor.
A grade acts as a general guide because every board remains individual. Knots, grain patterns, sapwood and tonal movement will vary within the permitted characteristics of that grade.
I have used Ted Todd and Woodworks floors across several projects, and I value the ability to coordinate products from across the Group. Petworth and Otis are each available in plank and herringbone formats. Both also use Care System 1, helping to simplify ongoing maintenance throughout the property.
Is wood flooring easy to maintain?
Yes. It is easy to maintain when cared for correctly, and its character improves with age.

Petworth by Ted Todd
Petworth is a light, nature-grade European oak floor from our Project collection. The brushed surface reveals the natural grain, with knots, sapwood and colour variation forming part of its character.
The floor is available in plank, wide plank, extra wide plank and narrow herringbone formats. Its hardened oil finish is maintained using Ted Todd Care System 1.

Otis by Woodworks by Ted Todd
Otis Extra Wide Plank belongs to Editions, a collection from our sister brand, Woodworks by Ted Todd. Its bleached, light-toned appearance is developed through a Naked Skin Lacquer finish. Nature-grade European oak introduces knots, gnarls and expressive grain across the floor.
Otis is available in extra wide plank and herringbone formats. The extra wide planks feature a smooth surface and hand-rolled edges, reflecting the extraordinary British floorcraft found within the Woodworks portfolio.
